It had been a beautiful spring morning the second week of high school when she first saw her.
As if straight out of a movie, she saw her standing together with Rararin, one of her friends from middle school, underneath the fully blooming cherry trees, petals slowly dancing in the wind. Her short blue hair stood in contrast to the pastel pink of the flowers surrounding them. She wore her school uniform as if it were warmer than the 14 degrees the weather forecast had promised and delivered earlier this morning.
As if tugged by a thread firmly tied between two of cupid’s arrows she walked closer, until her feet met the pink-stained grass underneath the trees.
Rararin and the girl she didn’t know looked away from their conversation, yellow eyes meeting hers.
Her heart skipped a beat at the intensity of her stare, but she spoke with all the confidence she could muster. “Hi, I’m Sumomone. Nice to meet you. Are you a new friend or Rararin’s?”
The girl looked her up and down, as if measuring her, before a tiny smirk made its way onto her face.
“I’ve never met a cute tomato before.”
Sumomone smacked her hands over her cheeks, and indeed, they were burning to the touch.
She levelled the blue-haired girl with a stare of her own, before an unbidden giggle escaped her lips as they shaped into a smile. It’s the first time they ever meet and she immediately starts teasing her? She kind of liked that, for some reason.
“I’m the best tomato you’ll ever have, I promise you,” she replied, ignoring Rararin’s wolf whistle, followed by her telling them not to make out too much in the middle of the school courtyard. The blue-haired girl shooed her away, and Sumomone could hear Rararin’s laughter fade into the distance as she headed through the school’s open doors.
“I’m Uiui,” the girl told her, finally giving her a name. She felt her heart flutter. “It’s nice to meet you too.”
Falling in love had never felt more natural.
